Tips for Birding

At 26 acres, just an acre larger than Enchanted Lands Park, this is Roswell’s largest park along Spring River Parkway, a jogging and biking trail following the Spring River waterway southwest-northeast through Roswell. “River” is a bit of an exaggeration given that even in wet times there is little water flowing through what in the park appears as a three-quarters-mile meandering grassy swale or weedy-bottomed, concrete-banked channel. However, the park’s sunken garden has a small artificial pond, with a waterfall feature at its north end, where passerines come to drink. Though some of the park is devoted to buildings and sports facilities, most of the park is turf, dotted with large oaks and other tree species. This is an older urban park, surrounded by houses, many with mature trees. There are numerous entrances and small parking areas.

Do not miss the 2 flower gardens at the north end of the park’s middle section. One, which is on your left as you enter the park off Riverside Drive via Cahoon Place, features a hummingbird feeder much of the year, and a seed feeder late fall and winter. The other is located in the triangle formed by Riverside, Delaware Avenue, and Highland Road. Named Roswell Public Garden on maps, it is unclear whether this second garden is actually part of Cahoon Park, or simply adjacent, but observations may be included in the park hotspot.

Montana Street forms the park’s western boundary; observations on the west side of that street should not be included for Cahoon Park, as the street is also the eastern boundary of Nancy Lopez Golf Course, which is a different hotspot, one of nine along the parkway.

Following the Spring River watercourse, the park is much longer than it is wide, averaging a block in width (north to south). A drive around the park is less than two miles; a hike from one end of the park to the other and back is about a mile and a half.
