Tips for Birding

This 25-acre city park is the westernmost of 9 hotspots located along Spring River Parkway, a jogging and biking trail following the Spring River channel southwest-northeast through Roswell. “River” is a somewhat aspirational term for what in wet times barely has water flowing;  as it passes east-west for a mile through the middle of this hotspot, it appears as a grassy swale, or at the west end, a weedy ditch. The park is bordered by Riverside Drive on the north, Estrellita Drive and 4th Street on the south, Sycamore Avenue on the east, and the Moore Avenue alignment on the west. The park’s entrance sign is at the corner of Sycamore and Riverside, but there is no parking there unless you park across Sycamore at the J. Kenneth Smith Bird Sanctuary, another hotspot, or along Riverside. Surrounded by houses on the north side of Riverside, with churches and commercial buildings on the park’s south side, Enchanted Lands is likely “underlisted” largely due to its proximity to its more popular neighbouring hotspot to the east.

Canoncito Drive, running north-south, bisects the park and offers some parking, both within the park near Riverside as well as on the east side of the Presbyterian church.

At the west end of the park, a large gravel parking area lies just north of NM-380, off Estrellita;  Estrellita is the road immediately west of the BLM building, and for many years has had no street sign. This end of the park is the beginning of an 18-basket disc golf course extending east through the park. You may find somewhat different species at this western end due to the grounds here being unirrigated (as is the narrow undeveloped swath continuing west), whereas most of the park is irrigated turf dotted by many trees of various maturities and species.

There is no way to bird the entire park as a driving loop. Parking at either end and walking a loop with its long center being the Spring River channel would be about two miles. However, parking at the west end parking area or along Canoncito, and then birding half the park at a time on foot is easy and enyoyable.
