Nancy Lopez Golf Course at Spring River

Tips for Birding

Although it is recommended to ask permission (or pay greens fees) to be on the golf course, you can do some very enjoyable birding of the course from bordering streets (8th Street and Riverside Drive on the north), the alleyway between 8th and Riverside on the east (just west of Wyoming Avenue), the Spring River Parkway on the south, and even from the adjacent J. Kenneth Smith Bird Sanctuary, all separated from the course by either chain-link or metal-picket fence you can see over and through.

However, it is important to remember that the Bird Sanctuary is itself a hotspot, so if you are in that hotspot only list birds for the golf course observed over the fence, on the course grounds.  Likewise, at the other end of the course, birds in Cahoon Park, also a separate hotspot, should be listed for that hotspot and not for the golf course;  that is, record birds at the Hole 15 water feature west of Montana Avenue for the golf course and birds observed east of Montana Avenue for Cahoon Park.

Similar to the course itself, houses east of the alleyway and west of Wyoming Avenue, as well as houses across Riverside Drive in the north along with those across 3rd and 4th Streets to the south, have a great many deciduous and evergreen trees. Birds observed in these areas are undoubtedly being listed for the golf course hotspot. Birds at Cielo Grande Park, north of the course’s 8th Street entrance parking area, too are being listed for the golf course hotspot. There is a portable toilet at the southwest corner of that park.
