Tips for Birding

This is an excellent location to view birds on the James River - in the open water, on islands in the river, and against the river banks.

Birds of Interest

Eagles nest on a platform just east (downriver) from this bridge.

About this Location

This walking-only bridge connects downtown Richmond and Brown's Island (on the north bank of the James River) with the southside neighborhood of Manchester. For birding, it also connects several nearby hot spots on both sides of the river.

For hiking and birding, the bridge connects trails running along both banks of the river. There is a rough, rocky shortcut (see photo) between the bridge and the James River Floodwall Section. (There is also a smoother (longer) connection.)

There are portable toilets on Brown's Island, close to the north end of the bridge.
