Tips for Birding

This hotspot includes 8-acre Loveless Park, north of the Spring River channel, and 4-acre JC Park, south of the channel. “River” is a bit of an exaggeration given that even in wet times there is little water flowing through what in the parks appears as a meandering concrete channel inset with flagstone and has a few hardy weeds populating the bottom. The Spring River Parkway jogging and biking trail follows the waterway southwest-northeast through Roswell; in this hotspot, the parkway is concrete and lies on the north side of the waterway -- that is, in Loveless rather than JC Park – but a footbridge from the Parkway connects the two parks. A chain link fence separates Loveless Park from an RV park to its north and from undeveloped property populated by small oaks to the west. A graveled alleyway on the 12th Street alignment, south of which are houses, forms the southern boundary of JC Park. The two parks abut Atkinson Avenue on their east.

The two parks are turfed, with almost all the trees (deciduous) being in Loveless. Immediately west of JC Park, extending to the western edge of Loveless Park is a small private orchard. Parking is located in Loveless at the large, shaded picnic area to which a drive leads off Atkinson Avenue.

Birders should remember that this hotspot is contiguous with the Spring River Park & Zoo hotspot on the east and the Main-Street-to-Loveless-Park hotspot on the west.  Strictly, birds seen or heard directly east or west of the two parks should be recorded for one of these bordering hotspots.
