Peterborough--Bears Creek Woods

Peterborough--Bears Creek Woods

Tips for Birding

This hotspot may be productive at any time, but visits earlier in the morning during spring and fall migration are likely to be more productive.

Birds of Interest

Resident species are those characteristic of mixed forests in the southern part of Peterborough Co. Given the isolated nature of these woods have potential as a bit of a migrant trap.

About this Location

Bears Creek Woods is an undeveloped Peterborough City park running parallel to Hilliard St. in the city's northwest quadrant. It is a strip of mixed woods dominated by white cedar occupying the valley of Bear Creek and bordered by upland shrub thickets with grape tangles. Long a local hotspot it is now a relict natural area surrounded by subdivisions and less frequently visited by birders. It is best accessed from the Cumberland Parkway Trail along the former Parkway right-of-way just east of Hilliard St. Just past the cement stormwater drain a footpath leads north from the parkway trail along the edge of the woods. A network of unmaintained footpaths makes their way north around a half-kilometer to Franklin Dr.

Parking in the vicinity of the Cumberland Parkway Trail is problematic as there is no street parking on Hilliard St. It may be possible to park in the parking lot of St. Paul Catholic Elementary School on the west side of Hilliard St. on weekends and holidays.
