About this Location

Situated on more than 2,000 feet of coastline on Hodgdon Cove, the Oak Point Farm 32-acre preserve is the last remaining undeveloped saltwater farm in Boothbay Harbor. This property serves as the headquarters for Boothbay Region Land Trust (BRLT) and the hub of a network of preserves throughout the region.

Oak Point Farm offers year-round activities. Visitors can enjoy an easy 1-mile loop hike that meanders through fields and forests along the extensive waterfront. In addition, a 0.6-mile stretch of trail to the shore and along the shoreline, as well as around the freshwater pond is universally accessible and suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.

A 2-acre freshwater pond is perfect for nature studies and wildlife viewing. Water access is provided with a deep water dock and space for pulling up kayaks is available, as well as three courtesy moorings and a courtesy dinghy for public use. The large mowed field is perfect for picnicking, kite flying, sports, yoga, and more. In winter, trails are open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, while the slope in front of the seasonal cottage is ideal for sledding, and the pond freezes over for ice skating.

The early 1800s farmhouse serves as BRLT’s visitor center and headquarters, as well as our year-round education center.  Surrounding the farmhouse are heirloom apple trees and other evidence of the property’s farming history. The property offers a vast assortment of natural habitats for wildlife observation. The freshwater pond teems with wildlife from ducks and beavers to frogs and turtles. With a wide variety of sea and land bird species, Oak Point Farm is a perfect spot for birders. In the summer and early fall, the fields of Oak Point Farm fill with milkweed attracting hundreds of monarch butterflies.

The farmhouse Visitor Center is open weekdays between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm.  During these hours, staff are on hand to provide general information and answer questions. Visitors are invited to view our small Nature Center. Public bathrooms are also available. The preserve is open from dawn until dusk, seven days per week.

Educational programming and events are scheduled throughout the year. Please see our calendar of events for current schedules or contact Environmental Educator Tracey Hall to inquire about school or educational group visits and programming.
