Tips for Birding

This 'coldspot' was created with the specific intention of evaluating bird use of intensive rowcrop agriculture, so please restrict your observations to birds seen between Ocean and Central Avenues (this stretch is almost 'pure' row crop).  Diversity and abundance fluctuate greatly according to the stage in the crop cycle, but usually It only takes 10 to 15 minutes to do a count.  The homestead and a ditch with permanent flow are the best spots. Mature cabbage patches attract the greatest numbers, but even large flocks of blackbirds foraging in them 'dissapear', and are easy to miss.

Birds of Interest

The only resident species is a Brewer's Blackbird flock that roosts in the only tree in the homestead. Barn Swallows are common in summer and Killdeer are regulars, together with another 10+ species, but close to half of the species recorded seem to be transients. Perhaps the most salient feature is the low species diversity and the fluctuating numbers.

About this Location

It is a 1.4 mile (2.2 kilometer) stretch of paved road with little traffic, best visited after 4 pm or weekends when there is no farming activity. It is accesible from the Lompoc area either via Ocean Avenue or Central Avenue, both on the way to Ocean Beach County Park.
