Tips for Birding

Jackson Point is primarily a morning flight spot. Typically, birds are moving west to reorient themselves with the mainland. It is not atypical to see whole flocks of birds attempt the crossover to Esther Island or even Tuckernuck, before turning around. Vice-versa, Jackson Point can be the first landfall for southern "overshoots", and observers here have even noted Summer Tanager flying in from directly off the water. This makes Jackson Point a migration "must" in both spring and fall.

Birds of Interest

Saltmarsh Sparrow nests in the marshes of Jackson Point, and Osprey is an omnipresent sight throughout the warmer months. In the winter, large congregations of Brant and seaducks prompt birders to take the scope out and scan. An established pattern of vagrants here has made it one of the foremost rarity hotspots of the Nantucket archipelago. Sedge Wren, Lark Sparrow, Townsend's Solitaire, Black-throated Gray Warbler, and Yellow-throated Warbler are just some of the vagrants that have been recorded here.
