Tips for Birding

Keep eyes and ears open from the parking lot onward. Fall warbler migrants have mostly been seen along edges of trails, mid-level up to canopy. It's thick so peering around is encouraged, looking at all levels.

Birds of Interest

Indigo buntings, blue grosbeaks, yellow-billed cuckoos, and yellow-breasted chats can be found in summer, at least by sound. All our woodpeckers have been noted here. Warblers in appropriate seasons can be found.

About this Location

This is something of a rectangular plot with first the parking lot which is often active, then a grassy section (sparrows), followed by a larger thick area before a trail crossing. At that crossing (sorry, I don't pay attention to the signs but there is a bench), take a left to find a tall snag that may or may not have something interesting on it. This can also be seen from the right side (west) if you keep going through to the darker section which is next, past the bench. Also, an American Woodcock has been spotted on that west side a few times. This section winds around and leads to some overlooks and short boardwalks. After the last boardwalk, there is one more trail which is a loop that takes about 40 minutes to get through. Usually not a lot of bird activity but interesting for fungi and plants.

Notable Trails

If time is an issue, you can simply take the front section after the lawn and find a decent amount of activity. Sometimes it's rather quiet. Sometimes not so much. As per usual, seasons make the difference.
