Created illegally by clear-cutting and draining the Great Cedar Swamp, Cumberland Farms Company inadvertently created 1,500 acres of open land. The land has been under different management schemes including hay, sod, and corn production, and sometimes the area is left fallow in weeds. Each of these uses has attracted concentrations of a variety of species, sometimes migrant shorebirds, always wintering raptors and migrant waterfowl, and some grassland breeding birds. It is the largest open grassland in southeastern Massachusetts.

Depending on the management scheme, the area has attracted concentrations of a variety of species, migrant shorebirds, wintering raptors, and migrant waterfowl (in the several thousand) annually since 1972, and some grassland breeding birds. The area contains at least six state-listed species, and six species of high conservation priority, including; American Kestrel, 2 pairs; Northern Bobwhite, 9 (1995); American Woodcock and Alder Flycatcher, over 2 pairs, annually; Bobolink, 150 (1995); Eastern Meadowlark, 52 (1995). The exact composition of birds depends on the management scheme - each scheme brings a different consort of species.

The IBA is owned by Cumberland Farms. It consists of nearly 2,000 acres and is bounded by Fuller Street in Middleboro and Halifax (southern boundary), Wood Street in Halifax (eastern boundary), River Street in Halifax and Middleboro (northern boundary), and MA-105 in Middleboro (western boundary).

The IBA is accessed at various points, most using the River Street entrance. Head east on River Street from MA-105. The entrance is about 0.5 miles on the right. If you see Pratt Street on your left you went too far. Pull into a dirt parking area on the right with a dirt road running into the fields. You can drive on the dirt road but most people walk in from the lot.

Other accesses include but aren't limited to Wood Street (known for Shrikes) and MA-105.

Stop anywhere you want and hike in or just scope the trees. No need to worry about walking at Cumbies trespassing-wise. Whoever owns it allows all sorts of people in for recreational use. Farmers using parts of the land lease it from Cumbies. Don't disturb any crops.

Wear orange clothing during hunting seasons (not needed on Sundays), making your presence known. Boots are also recommended.
