About this Location

Nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at an 8,000-foot elevation, this 30-acre park is reached via a four-mile park access road running west from narrow NM-94 about 7 miles southwest of Mora. Though the access road is paved, it is so narrow in places that two vehicles can’t pass one another.  There are a number of blind turns. The road has many potholes and usually deep eroded ditches on either side.

A dam at the southwest edge of the lake was built in the 1930s to enlarge the existing natural lake, providing storage of more irrigation water. An intake canal at the north end of the dam feeds the lake;  an outlet at the south end allows for overflow into a creek or channel extending to Rito Morphy, in the rare event that would be necessary. Today the lake is maintained at 15 acres for fishing and camping during summer;  the park is closed in the winter.

Campsites are located around the east, north, and northwest shores of the lake. Due to limited parking and campsite size limitations, the maximum RV length allowed is 18 feet. But you wouldn’t want to try to pull anything longer up the county road anyway. Motorized boats, or at least boats with motors other than electric, are not allowed on the lake. Campsites have no water.
