Holyhood Cemetery was established in 1857 by the Archdiocese of Boston as a burial place for Catholics of Irish descent. The cemetery covers 65 acres and contains over 40,000 graves, including those of notable figures such as John F. Kennedy, Rose Kennedy, Joseph P. Kennedy, and Edward M. Kennedy. The cemetery is also known for its Gothic Revival chapel, which was built in 1872 and designed by Patrick Keely. The cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public.
Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood in the Chestnut Hill area of Brookline, Holyhood is a picturesque Victorian cemetery of narrow, winding paths, often ornate grave markers, graceful old trees, and flowering shrubbery.
The entrance to Holyhood Cemetery is on Heath Street.
