Asilomar SB--Majella Creek willow patch

Asilomar SB--Majella Creek willow patch

Pacific Grove, California 93950

Tips for Birding

The willow patch can be viewed from the bridge (described in "About this Location," below), but once you reach the boardwalk, you are in another Hot Spot [Asilomar SB--sandy beach]. Despite its small size, the willow patch attracts passerine migrants in spring and fall. In the past, in the 1980s-1990s, the creek ended at a small pond/lagoon, that once attracted ducks, but now that pond is gone and the creek empties at the north end of Asilomar SB (and outside this Hot Spot).

Birds of Interest

The birds of interest here are primarily passerine migrants in spring and fall. Various vagrants, especially "eastern" warblers, have been recorded, most often in fall.

About this Location

This very small Hot Spot holds a patch of willows, along Majella Creek, across the street (Sunset Drive) just south of Asilomar Conference Grounds, and upslope from the sandy beach at Asilomar State Beach. Access is quite limited. There is a wide dirt shoulder used for parking along Sunset, and at the west end of that parking area a trail leads over a bridge and shortly thereafter to a boardwalk that parallels the sandy beach, and continues south to the parking lot for Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach [that boardwalk is in a different Hotspot: Asilomar SB--sandy beach]. At least the wide trail from the parking area to the bridge appears to be wheelchair accessible, but the boardwalk through the dunes, in the adjacent Hotspot, is more difficult.

There is an access trail just east of the Fishwife Restaurant, across Sunset from Crocker, that leads south to some pines and ends at the Spanish Bay golf course in Pebble Beach. At the dunes there one can view the eastern end of the willow patch. Note the "no trespassing" signs on property owned by the Fishwife, and do not enter private property. The Spanish Bay golf course is also private property with no public access (unless you pay to play a round of golf there).

There are no restrooms in this small 'willow patch' Hotspot, but a public restroom is located at the Phoebe Hearst Social Hall located on the Asilomar Conference Grounds across the street from this Hotspot.
