Tips for Birding

The best birding is in winter. The park is mostly soccer and baseball fields, but of interest to birders is a stretch of brush and bottomland woods along the Great Miami River, which is good for sparrows, including White-crowned, and woodpeckers, including Pileated. Winter Wren has been seen but is not regularly. The fields and small adjacent crop fields can produce Eastern Meadowlarks and Horned Larks. There are also views of an abandoned gravel pit just to the north of the park, which frequently holds waterfowl in winter. Admission is $2 daily or $6 annually, but there is almost never anyone there to collect it in winter. When there is time, combine a stop here with visits to Shawnee Lookout and Lost Bridge.
