Tips for Birding

You can park on pavement at the playground, or near the bird blind if the access road isn't too muddy.  The blind is well maintained, and has bird feeders and a view of the pond.  A gravel and dirt trail circles around behind the pond, and meanders over to the corral, ranch house, and through a more wooded area.

Birds of Interest

In winter this park is an excellent sparrow location.  Harris's Sparrows can be found in the area north of the pond, and visiting the bird blind.  Lincoln's, Song, Field, Lark, White-crowned, White-throated, Savannah, and Vesper Sparrows can be seen throughout the park.  Waterfowl can be seen on the pond, and are best viewed from the blind before walking the trails and possibly spooking them.

In migration periods, the wooded areas and pond edge can be good for warblers and other migrants.  The endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler may be present in the wooded areas throughout spring.

About this Location

Dripping Springs Ranch Park is owned and operated by the City of Dripping Springs and has been a part of the City’s recreational facilities since 2008 with the purchase of the Harrison family homestead and working ranch. The acquisition was made possible by funds from Hays County park bond and funds dedicated by the City. The acquisition and planned improvements were right on target with the City’s master park plans for a community gathering area with large open spaces. The new facilities became a reality with generous funding and matching grants from Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Lower Colorado River Authority. The Park has also been embraced with generous gifts from citizens,  private donors and local businesses.

The Park opened in 2008 and is enjoyed by thousands of users. It is a very popular park for horse riders who participate in competitive and leisure equine events as well as for individuals and families who are attracted to the many outdoor recreational opportunities, including hiking, washer pitching, wildlife viewing, primitive camping and gatherings. It is the perfect spot for a family picnic or a special occasion for reunions and weddings.

The Park is home to annual festivals that attract folks from all areas of the Hill Country and beyond. With the additional new facilities, the Park is now home to a versatile venue that is one of the largest in the Texas Hill Country.

Restrooms are available in the form of port-a-cans down near the corral/ranch house 24/7.  Main pavilion indoor facilities are subject to varying event rentals and office hours.
