Tips for Birding

Pull off the Hwy onto the shoulder, and if possible, drive off the shoulder onto the grass. Usually the ground is firm, but road and construction debris may keep you out of the grass. Birding is limited to viewing the two lakes from the wide grassy shoulder. There can be songbirds, but the highway is always loud.

Birds of Interest

Ducks, raptors, and sometimes gulls. These ponds are rarely birded. The view to the north at Padera is outstanding, and Harris's Hawk has been found here twice. Eurasian Wigeon at the cattle pond in 2009. Cassin's Sparrow and Ladder-backed Woodpecker occasionally. Say's Phoebe once at Padera. Padera could harbor about any waterbird, due to its size.

About this Location

There are two lakes at this location:  Padera Lake on the north side, and "The Midlothian Cattle Pond" on the south side. Padera Lake is much larger and holds more promise. A few years back Padera was drained, and small trees grew up in it, creating a wading bird rookery. This is gone now, so ducks and raptors are the only draw to this place. The smaller cattle pond to the south hasn't had any ducks on it the past view visits, likely due to all the nearby construction activity.

Notable Trails

None. You can walk the fence line a little at both lakes in order to get the best vantage points. There is a good chance you will miss the cattle pond on the first pass. Dedicated paved U-turns are in the median strip, although a few have been recently removed, and you will have to use these to visit both ponds.
