Tips for Birding

Be sure to also check the small sections of natural areas surrounding the western grassy area. If you go to the natural area on the eastern side around sunset in the summer you will likely see Lesser Nighthawks hunting and if you listen closely, you may even hear them singing.

Birds of Interest

The ponds always have a nice assortment of waterfowl and offer fantastic views of Ring-necked Ducks and American Wigeons. The western area also has resident lovebirds in the palm trees. In the natural area, hummingbirds (primarily Anna's), gnatcatchers, Verdin, towhees, thrashers, doves (including Inca), flickers (including the occasional Gilded), Gila Woodpeckers, Gambel's Quail, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Cactus Wrens, roadrunners, Lesser Nighthawks, hawks, falcons, warblers, and sparrows can be found. Small numbers of Inca Doves can be found on both the grassy areas as well as the natural area.

About this Location

This is a small but diverse park. The parking lot and restrooms are located on the south side of the park off North 20th Street. The western half of the park is mostly a grassy area with two man-made ponds and concrete pathways. Heading to the eastern half takes you to the natural area that is unpaved, gravel trails. This area is mostly scrubby with small trees and a few saguaros. As always in this part of Arizona, stay on the trails and be mindful of where you step; rattlesnakes are always a possibility. Off-leash dogs are frequently with their owners in the natural area.

Notable Trails

There are no named trails but concrete ones run though the western half and unpaved gravel trails run through the eastern half.
