Holyoke, Massachusetts 01040

About this Location

Whiting Street Reservoir is a scenic lake in Holyoke that serves as an auxiliary drinking supply for the city. The reservoir has a capacity of more than 479 million gallons of water and can provide 1.5 million gallons of water per day. The reservoir is surrounded by a 3.8-mile loop trail that is popular for hiking, walking, and running. The trail offers views of the lake and the cliffs of Mount Tom State Reservation.

Whiting Street Reservoir was a farsighted venture in 1888 and was built by human muscle using horse-drawn dump carts and steam power.  It served as one of Holyoke’s drinking water supplies until the mid-1980s. Whiting and its watershed is an integral part of the Mount Tom ecosystem.

Holyoke Water Works allows the use of the service road to walk, jog, and bicycle during daylight hours.  Fishing, hunting, and picnicking are not allowed.  Dogs must be leashed.
