Tips for Birding

The lake is the primary feature of interest at this park, and can be viewed from many parking areas along the one-way loop road that follows the eastern shore of the lake. A smaller lake is at the southern end of the loop and often contains geese and a flock of ducks. A walking path follows the perimeter of the main lake, and the southwestern portion borders the golf course, including ponds and some vegetation that can be good for songbirds. The golf course is off limits, except to golfers.

Birds of Interest

The lake often holds the only flocks of diving ducks in the El Paso area, and a long list of rare water birds have shown up here, including loons, scoters, terns, and kittiwakes. Look for Ospreys in migration and Mississippi Kites in summer. Burrowing Owls frequent the golf course and the eastern edge of the property. Multiple pairs of Tropical Kingbirds have bred at this site in recent years, and can be be found throughout the park, but are often seen around the edge of the golf course. Western Kingbird is also common here, so care must be taken.
