Walk or drive the road making frequent stops to look and listen for birds. It’s a pretty quiet road with very little traffic.

Stephens Knob is nearly eight miles in length. It's a well maintained gravel road that’s lightly traveled. During the winter, nice views are available off of the north side. The road is mostly deciduous forest on both sides.
The road is in the Jellico area the furthest southeastern portion of the Stearns Ranger District, bordering Tennessee. The Jellico area is split between McCreary and Whitley counties in Kentucky, encompassing the well-known areas of Stephens Knob, Ryan’s Mountain, and Wolf Knob. This area includes Stearns’ only designated old growth which is nearly all contained between Jellico Creek and the Tennessee.
