This eBird hotspot is located on the east side of the Arizona-New Mexico state line. There is a hotspot on the west side of the border in Cochise County, Arizona, San Simon Cienega (Arizona),  that may be used for checklists reporting birds seen on that side of the border. Birders who carefully keep their bird records by county and state will want to be aware of the location of the state line in this area.

San Simon Cienega is on the San Simon River. A ciénega is a wetland system unique to the American Southwest. Ciénagas are alkaline, freshwater, spongy, wet meadows with shallow-gradient, permanently saturated soils in otherwise arid landscapes that often occupied nearly the entire widths of valley bottoms.
