About this Location

The park is on private land and requires permission to enter. This can be obtained at the park office 1 mile off NM-522 after turning onto NM-196 at the crossroads in Costilla.

Rio Costilla Cooperative Livestock Association (RCCLA) purchased 80,000 acres, once part of the Sangre de Cristo Land Grant, in 1942. Cattle ranching was the primary focus at the time. In the 1950’s the land began to be seen for its unique recreational value. In 1983, visitors were given the opportunity to hunt, fish and camp in designated portions of the ranch.
