Tips for Birding

This State Park is popular with fishers year round, and with recreational boaters seasonally. Because of this, it is monitored by park law enforcement so please park only in designated areas.

Birding the park is best achieved by stopping at places along the main road from the entrance to the boat ramp. When birding near the boat ramp, please yield right-of-way to boaters loading and unloading their vessels. The boat ramp is a good place to scan the lake in colder months for waterfowl, gulls, terns, and soaring raptors. There are a few trails off this parking lot, created mainly by fishers looking for a better spot.

Other places to bird for woodland species (refer to the linked trail map on this page) include a picnic shelter (when not in use by reserving groups); a small pulloff; the park campground (stay away from campers and their equipment); a small wildlife viewing loop trail; and an equestrian staging area (stay away from the horses and trailers). All of these are on the north side of the main park road except the Wildlife Viewing loop trail.

Birds of Interest

See the linked eBird page for this hotspot. This is a fairly well birded place, but no notable rarities have thus far have been reported.

About this Location

This location is popular with boaters, fishers, and campers, so this may lower the number of birds found. See the State Park link for park details.

Notable Trails

See the trail map for multi-use trails in the park. There are 24 miles of these trails; note that they are popular with equestrians too. Be cautious around horses (i.e., try not to make sudden movements or loud noises that might startle the animals and unhorse the riders). At this point, not enough birding data have been collected for specific trails (therefore none are recommended specifically); if you note which trails you have included on your eBird checklist, it could lead to additional hotspots being created for productive trails. Note that there is a separate hotspot for the Lakeview Trails, since there is a convenient parking area and trailhead for it.
