This is a designated section of the East Coast Greenway, that runs along an abandoned rail corridor of the former Providence, Hartford, & Fishkill Railroad.  This western section of the Greenway is called the Trestle Trail.  The eastern section of the bike trail is paved, but west of Summit it is not paved and will eventually connect to the Moosup Valley State Park Trail at the Connecticut state line.
