Tips for Birding

There are two main trails in this lovely park.

One is a loop on the upper part of the park. It is fairly level with easy walking and benches. The part of the upper trail that is close to the river runs along the edge of the natural river "levee.' The slope is a thick tangle of understory vegetation in the summer, perfect for small, hiding passerines.

The other half of the upper loop leads through an open prairie (in the process of being restored to a prairie) with grasses, brush, and cacti.

Along this trail is a bird blind (unsure if the water feature is operational as of January 2024) and Chimney Swift Towers.

The western fence line along the upper trail may yield a good number of sparrows in the winter.

There are three ways down to the lower part of the park along the river. One is a fairly steep trail, one is a steep slope but with stone steps and the third one is up near the county road. There is an easy trail that runs along the river.

Birds of Interest

Lots of Sparrows, Woodpeckers, Belted Kingfisher, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Carolina Chickadee, Loggerhead Shrike
