Russell Greene Natural Area

Georgia, Vermont 05454

About this Location

The trail in the Russell Greene Natural Area passes through upland coniferous (white pine, hemlock) and deciduous (beech, birch, maple) forest, and is immediately adjacent to Deer Brook which flows through many wetland habitats, including open water, cattail marsh, and alder and willow shrub. As such, a nice diversity of forest, wetland, and water birds may be found along the way. Warblers and other songbirds can be found in good numbers during spring and fall migrations.

Russell Greene Natural Area is managed by the Town of Georgia.

Notable Trails

Beginning at a parking area on the north side of VT-104A, near where Deer Brook meets Arrowhead Mountain Lake, the trail heads north-northeast. A fork soon allows taking a path immediately along the stream, eventually leading to a bridge (built in August 2022) to access a loop through the upland forest on the east side of the stream. Return to the parking area from the bridge can be by the same streamside path, or in part by the parallel, higher return trail. The route is about a mile out and back. Boardwalks keep the feet dry throughout the trail's length but be aware of ticks in the brush along the way, and mosquitoes in season.

The AllTrails website has a description and map of a hike at Russell Greene Natural Area.
