The wetland, Dresden Bog, is part of an eight-square-mile watershed that empties into the Eastern River at Dresden Mills. It is dominated by shallow and deep marsh and open water bordered by shrub swamps, forested wetlands, and forested uplands. Wild rice makes up a major component of the wetland vegetation and is an important attraction for migrating waterfowl.
This area provides habitats for numerous species of waterfowl and wading birds, shorebirds, aquatic furbearers, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and other wildlife. Because of its proximity to Merrymeeting Bay, Dresden Bog serves as an important feeding area for bald eagles, which are common visitors to the site.
