About this Location

Sherman Lake Rest Area is on US-1 in Newcastle. It offers a scenic view of Sherman Lake, which is actually a salt marsh that was once a freshwater lake. The lake was created in the 1930s when a dam was built to allow US-1 to cross the Marsh River. The dam was destroyed by a storm surge in 2005, and the lake drained and returned to its natural state. Sherman Lake is a wetland and shallow warm water lake that supports a rich biodiversity of plants and animals. There are several interpretive signs along the banks of the marsh that provide information about the ecology, history, and geology of the area.
