Tips for Birding

Most birders will walk to the viewing platform on the west side that overlooks the marsh, then go south to the small bridge over the creek.  From there the trail goes in a loop, following the edge of the marsh to the west and passing through meadow on the east side. At the far south end of the loop, a small trail extends along a thin spit of land through the marsh - this is a great spot for Virginia Rail and American Bitterns.  The Pine/Spruce forest at the trail entrance is also a good spot to check for owls.   In the fall, the edges of the marsh are worth checking for Nelson's Sparrows.

Birds of Interest

Given the large size of the marsh, this is a great spot for Virginia Rail, American Bittern, Northern Harrier, Alder Flycatcher and Sandhill Crane.  It is also a reliable spot for both Marsh Wren and Sedge Wren.

Miller Creek is also the 'go-to' spot in Peterborough to get that 'Chickadee-feeling' as hundreds of young 'birders' (and adults!) have held out their hands with birdseed and fed the local Chickadees.  The best places for feeding the Chickadees is either at the main gate or near the small bridge (Fall and Winter are best).

About this Location

This is likely one of the largest, accessible marshes in the Peterborough area.  It is a short trail (<1km) that follows the edge of the marsh.  There is a multi-level viewing platform on the west side of the trail.  There is a small parking area on the north side of the road (2 cars) and also two spots in front of the gate.
