Tips for Birding

This is a good location for migrant passerines in spring and fall and woodland breeders in summer.  It is also the only legal access point for walking in to view the Johnston pits hotspot.

Birds of Interest

Generally good for migrant passerines.  Yellow-throated Warbler and Northern Parula often are on territory in the big Cottonwood trees around the parking area if you can hear them over the traffic.  Pileated Woodpecker and Prothonotary Warbler are possible in the woods.

About this Location

The parking lot is on the south side of NW 66th Avenue west of the Des Moines River bridge.  Please note that these are dirt trails which are maintained for mountain biking and they are regularly posted closed to entry when conditions would subject them to damage.  Off trail access through the woods is always allowed.
