Pitch Fork Road Pond

Pitch Fork Road Pond

Wendt, Texas 78945

Tips for Birding

The pond is on the south side of the dead-end frontage road. In the winter, one will be looking into the sun. But it’s still quite doable—change your direction (east or west) to have your best view despite the sun.

Start viewing the pond immediately after crossing the railroad tracks. You might find sparrows and other ground-feeding seed eaters in the field between the road and the pond.

Drive slowly along the road. Unfortunately, highway noise will make it hard to bird by ear, but it is possible. If you use Merlin, Merlin might have a better time filtering out the road noise to hear the fainter sounds.

Be sure to check the far side of the pond.

Once past the culvert (with the "no fishing" sign), keep a close eye and ear on the near shore thicket.

Past this first grouping of vegetation, there is a spit of land that divides the larger pond from a smaller, shallower pond. This might be a good place to look for Wood Ducks and dabblers and to listen for Swamp Sparrow.

Continue along the road to the farmstead and look for woodland species along the power lines, power poles and in the overgrown field.

Unfortunately, access to the river is fenced off so there's not a chance to look for waterbirds in the river corridor.

Birds of Interest

Waterfowl in the winter. Shorebird species will depend on the lake level which can fluctuate with rainfall.
