Lake Clark

Tips for Birding

Lake Clark Park has good views of the lake. As with most lakes, a scope is very useful. A walk from the small lot to the larger fisherman's lot and then to the parking area for Kachina Prairie is the best birding strategy for this relatively small area.

Birds of Interest

This is a good spot for Neotropic Cormorant. Ducks are the primary draw here, gulls and general songbirds can be found here. Not good for shorebirds, as the lake level seems always steady. Diving ducks like this location. There is marsh habitat on the whole west side of the lake, but a kayak or small boat is required to do this type of birding.

About this Location

There is a big fisherman's lot here, and a boat ramp. This is a good place to bird by kayak, as there are plenty of nooks and crannies on the west side of the lake that are only accessible by kayak or small boat. If the wind is greater than 4 mph, I don't recommend kayak birding here. There is another very small fisherman's lot on the northside of the lake. This is off Country Club Road, aka 1722. This area can produce a variety of birds, including waders and shorebirds at the right time of year.

Notable Trails

Kachina Prairie Park has a nice loop trail that is probably around one mile in total length. You can park at that trailhead, or, it's only three tenths of a mile from the small lot at Lake Clark Park. You can walk around a good bit from either place, but the only trail seems to be the loop at Kachina Prairie.
