Tips for Birding

A scope isn't generally necessary, although small shorebirds across the larger pond might warrant one. Prairie trails are all mowed. The only sections through actual woods are adequately maintained. Watch for poison ivy and ticks. It's best to do some wandering and familiarize yourself with the trails. Sections of the large pond are only visible from some spots, so taking the time to walk is rewarding. The woods deserves attention during migration.

Birds of Interest

A little of everything.

About this Location

The entrance is hard to see and it's just a little dirt pull-off into a grassy parking area. From there, trails branch off to the south and to the east. They all join a network of trails that hit every habitat, but the one to the east gets you to the biggest pond quickest. This property has prairie, pond, orchard, and woods habitat. All of it (the prairie most notably) pretty high quality. Some of it is old apple orchard which makes for some interesting birding. With more dedicated birding throughout the year, this spot could add 30-40 species and be one of the top hotspots by species in Ingham County. It's surprisingly under-birded.
