About this Location

Fiske Pond Conservation Area is in the southwest corner of Wendell. The Area builds upon a corridor of permanently protected land around Wendell and contributes to a larger conservation area envisioned by the North Quabbin Regional Landscape Partnership. The Town purchased the property in 2005 with the help of a Mass. Division of Conservation Resources Self-Help Grant and conveyed a conservation restriction to the Mass. Department of Conservation and Recreation for permanent protection and passive recreation. Grateful acknowledgment is also given to the Mt. Grace Land Conservation Trust and its contributors for technical assistance and a generous startup grant.

Many species of wildlife call the Fiske Pond Conservation Area home including moose, deer, beaver, spotted turtle, kingfisher, and great blue heron. The major feature of the 125-acre parcel is Fiske Pond, a 10-acre pond formed when Fiske Brook was dammed in the 19th century. Remnants of a sawmill and an intact earthen dam are located at the south end of the pond. Fiske Brook and Skerry Brook also run through the property, and several unique habitats contribute to a wide range of ecosystems and biodiversity including oak and pine forest, a spruce bog, as well as a hemlock swamp.

The Fiske Pond Conservation Area is owned by the Town of Wendell and managed by the Wendell Conservation Commission, the Fiske Pond Advisory Committee, Friends of Fiske, and dedicated local volunteers. Please consider joining us in trail improvement, invasive species removal, open space preservation, and other projects designed to protect and improve our environment.
