Pebble Beach--Spanish Bay

Pebble Beach--Spanish Bay

Del Monte Forest, California 93953

Tips for Birding

If you enter Pebble Beach through the Pacific Grove gate, the Hotspot will be the first that you encounter along 17-Mile Drive. You'll pass Spanish Bay resort and golf-course, and then make a sharp right turn where the directions point to 17 Mile Drive. There is a wide sandy beach with lots of parallel parking next to the beach. There is also a larger parking lot (turn right where the road goes left) on a one-way loop road to parking spots. The north end of Spanish Bay beach often has shorebirds from fall through spring. Also near the north end of this parking loop is a handicap-access ramp to some nice picnic tables overlooking the beach.

The north end of that paved parking loop end in a boardwalk along the north end of Spanish Bay and goes all the way to Asilomar State Beach in Pacific Grove (a separate Hotspot). About half-way along the boardwalk a set of rocks on the left separates the north end of the sandy Spanish Bay beach and the south end of Asilomar State Beach, and the rocks are the northern border of this Hotspot. [Note -- this boardwalk was damaged in the storms of winter 2022, and signs say it is "closed," but many people still use it with caution, and separate detours across the sand have developed to avoid the worst spots.]

At the south end of the 17 Mile Drive parking along the sandy beach, you'll see parts of a golf course across the road (inland) that has some freshwater ponds, which may be viewed from that side of the drive. At the south end of the beach is a small white cottage called the "Beach House," which can be rented for events. The Beach House sits right above a patch of rocky shoreline at the end of the sandy beach, and that rocky shore can be easily accessed on the other side of the Beach House as 17 Mile Drive curves west towards Pt. Joe. From August-April, this rocky shore can be good for rocky shorebirds, particularly at high tide. These can be viewed from the first parking area past Shore House. Beyond that parking area, the next parking lots will be in the adjacent Pt. Joe Hotspot.

Birds of Interest

From July to early May, watch for Sanderling, Whimbrel, Marbled Godwit, and gulls along the sandy shore, and Black Oystercatcher, Black Turnstone, Black-bellied Plover, and Surfbird on the patches of rocky shore, and scarcer waders such as Wandering Tattler, Ruddy Turnstone, or Red Knot (rare). Cormorants, gulls, and scoters (mostly Surf Scoter) forage on Spanish Bay itself; watch for Brant in migration.

Watch for White-tailed Kites over the parking lots or golf-course, and Osprey over the shoreline.

About this Location

There is a fee to enter Pebble Beach. There are no public restrooms in this Hotspot, but nice public restrooms are available at Bird Rock parking area, about 1.5 miles south on 17-Mile Drive.
