Tips for Birding

There are a set of ponds south of the community of Sylvester. The ponds are on the northwest side of Farm-to-Market Road 57. Pull all the way off the road on the shoulder (there is room to park) and scope the ponds through the fence. 

A scope is necessary.

Birds of Interest

Great spot in dry West Texas for waterfowl in the winter--Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Mallard, Canvasback, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, Bufflehead and Ruddy Duck.

Summer time will find Black-necked Stilt and American Avocet as well as Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Chimney Swift, Common Nighthawk and an occasional Snowy Plover. 

Spring migrants include Stilt, Baird's, Least and Western Sandpiper and Sanderling. Forster's Tern and Snowy Egret have been reported at this location.

Rock and Bewick's Wren can be found here as well as Clay-colored, Field, Lark, White-crowned, White-throated, Vesper, Savannah and Lincoln's Sparrow. 

About this Location

It should be understood but please do not cross the fence to get closer to the ponds.
