Birds of Interest

In November, 2023, there were lots of woodpeckers in the trees. Woodpeckers reported at this spot include Red-bellied, Downy and Ladder-backed Woodpeckers, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Northern Flicker in the winter months.

Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Ash-throated and Scissor-tailed Flycatchers and Western Kingbird, White-eyed and Red-eyed Vireo, Summer Tanager and Indigo and Painted Buntings have all been found here in the summertime.

Water-centric birds like Great Blue Heron, Belted Kingfisher, Killdeer, Eastern Phoebe Are present in this park.

The largest of Clifton’s parks is City Park, situated along Riverside Drive on the eastern boundary of Clifton. The heavily wooded park offers picnic areas, an open-air gazebo, two children’s play areas, a large playing field, nature trails, a disc golf course, a dog park, basketball goals, nature trails, and river access for fishing, kayaking, and paddle boarding.

City Park borders the Bosque River and extends north from FM 219. City Park retains portions of the original native stone structures built in 1933-1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. A historical marker featuring the Old Mill is located near the spillway.
The gazebo is available at no cost for parties and other special events. (Contact City Hall for scheduling.)
