Nephton-Jack Lake Hydro Corridor

Nephton-Jack Lake Hydro Corridor

About this Location

The hydro corridor is accessed off County Rd 6 immediately just north of West Kosh Rd. There is ample room for parking along the road allowance paralleling CR 6 at the beginning of the hydro road. For vehicles with high clearance (the trail can be tough!) there is additional parking in a large clearing 150 m west of CR 6.

The corridor features a gravel access road that runs its length which is used as a snowmobile trail in winter and is frequented by ATVs and other off-road vehicles in the summer months. The traffic on this road can be very heavy on weekends and holidays. The road crosses rock outcrops and can at times be deeply rutted, so attempting to drive it in anything but a 4WD vehicle with high clearance is not recommended. Walking is relatively easy and for the most part dry, but the road can be very wet in places due to heavy spring runoff and beaver floods and so waterproof footwear is recommended.

The trail begins in mixed deciduous forest, with an abundance of wetlands and rock, oak-dominated ridges typical of the southern Shield and species like Eastern Whip-poor-will, Common Nighthawk, Eastern Towhee, Field Sparrow and Yellow-throated Vireo may be encountered. After a couple of kilometres the forest becomes more coniferous-dominated (similar to adjacent Petroglyphs Provincial Park or Kawartha Nordic ski club) and Canada Jays and Black-backed Woodpeckers may be possible.
