Mt. Washington--Alpine Garden Trail Area

About this Location

The Alpine Garden Trail is a scenic hike that takes you through a rare alpine meadow on the east side of Mount Washington. The trail is 3.3 miles long and gains 744 feet of elevation, making it a moderate challenge for most hikers. The trail starts from Mount Washington Auto Road, which has a fee to access. You can enjoy views of the White Mountains and the Great Gulf and observe the delicate wildflowers that bloom in June. The trail is also popular for snowshoeing and running, but the weather can change quickly and the area is very exposed to wind and fog. Dogs are allowed on the trail but must be leashed at all times.

The railhead is accessed seasonally from Mount Washington Auto Road just above the 6-mile mark across from the Wamsutta Trailhead. The road is only open to vehicle traffic when it is snow-free.
