Tips for Birding

As with anywhere, early mornings and later in the evening provide the best birding. The place can flood after a hard rain but that typically brings about a few different birds. The place is a popular dog walking spot so be prepared on that front. Leashes are required but the rule is not always observed.

About this Location

Muddy Creek Preserve is a 147-acre preserve on Pleasant Valley Road near Elm Grove Road.  There is open space and a paved walking and jogging trail, approximately 1 mile in length.

Muddy Creek is a small preserve in Wylie that has 2 disjointed trails that are roughly a half mile around each. The trails are separated by Pleasant Valley road; each provides good birding opportunities in a relatively small area. The first trail is adjacent to the water treatment plant and the second trail is about 100 feet further up Pleasant Valley Road on the left. The sign to the entrance is very small but this is the preferred trail for birding at Muddy Creek. From the parking lot to the small loop trail that is all concrete covers about 0.75 miles and usually offers a chance to see anywhere from 10-20 different species of birds depending on the season. One birder's high count for Muddy Creek Preserve has been 26 species twice. Once in the summer and most recently during a Christmas Bird Count which illustrates the consistency of this small patch.
