Whipps Mill Wetland

Whipps Mill Wetland

Tips for Birding

If you plan to bird from the western edge of the wetland there is a handicap accessible trail as well as a lower grass berm that will allow you to get closer to the brushy edges of the wetland. That said, many more birds can be found if you bushwhack through the wetland, accessing it either through the woods on the north side (adjacent to AB Sawyer Park) or via the grassy berm on the south side. When walking through the wetland it is possible to avoid mucky areas, but there will likely be wet spots and some small, shallow stream crossings so calf-waders can be helpful.

About this Location

Whipps Mill Wetlands is a low area along the Middle Fork of the Beargrass Creek that has ample habitat for birds year round. There is a paved trail along the outside of the wetland that is wheelchair accessible, but more habitat can be reached by bushwhacking through the wetland itself. There is no parking at the wetland itself, so please park at AB Tom Sawyer park and then head southward to access the trail.
