Cal Young Park

Abilene, Texas 79602

Tips for Birding

For a park that is nearly completely devoid of understory vegetation, this park was surprisingly birdy in December, 2023. A quick 15 drive through the park yielded 18 species including fly-by Double-crested Cormorant and Mallard and Belted Kingfisher.

if one has time, it might be worthwhile to walk the vegetation along the creek on the far northern, less developed end of the park.

it appears that it might be possible to walk that vegetation line then cross over the creek at the low water crossing on East South Fifth Street to work another line of vegetation along the creek by South Carver Drive.

Notable Trails

None. The park grounds might be hard packed enough for a scooter to be able to successfully navigate to the creek’s edge.
