Tips for Birding

This site is PPWW 009 on the Brazos Valley Loop of the Prairies and Pineywoods West Wildlife Trail, Great Texas Wildlife Trails.

Bird the edges of the woods and the arboretum trail during the day. Herons and hawks can often be seen from the open areas and creek.

Birds of Interest

Good for migrants. Trails in wooded areas and along edges provide ample opportunities to find migrant warblers and thrushes.

About this Location

Bee Creek Park and Anderson Arboretum are city parks located in central College Station. Ballgames on weekends can disrupt birding, and due to occasional crime, it is not recommended to bird here after dark. During the day, the forested trails are safe. If you do not wish to use the arboretum trails, paved park trails can still provide a nice checklist.

Bee Creek Park
Bee Creek Park is 26.5 acres. Amenities include a 50-meter pool with a separate wading pool, four lighted tennis courts, two lighted softball fields, a sand volleyball court, picnic units, two playgrounds, and a 17-acre arboretum. The pavilion has a 100-person capacity, 12 picnic tables, lights, water and electrical outlets.

Anderson Arboretum
The D.A. "Andy" Anderson Arboretum, originally called the Brazos County Arboretum, was founded in 1976 as part of the USA Bicentennial celebration. The College Station City Council designated that this area would be used as an arboretum, i.e., a place where trees and shrubs are cultivated for educational and scientific purposes. On 17 wooded acres bounded by the cemetery, Bee Creek, and Business 6, the Arboretum contains a shelter and an interpretive trail system that emphasizes native Texas plants. It was renamed in 1986, in honor of D.A. Anderson, a former Mayor of College Station. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department provided partial funding for this park. 26.5-acre Bee Creek Park is also located here.

Notable Trails

The Arboretum trail runs behind the pavilion and is a small loop through the woods.
