Birds of Interest

An Iceland (Thayer's) Gull has been returning to the Cos Way & Red Dot Pier establishments every winter for nearly a decade. Keep an eye out for other unusual gulls like Glaucous Gull, as well as sundry shorebirds, ducks, and terns.

About this Location

The Laguna Madre is visible from the JFK Causeway and is often times loaded with waterfowl, shorebirds, gulls and terns, and wading birds. You may not park on the causeway to view birds, but can pull off and park in the Cos Way Bait & Tackle Shop or Red Dot Pier parking lots or anywhere on the beach access road down to the Intracoastal Turnaround. From the Cos Way parking lot, you can walk west parallel to the the causeway to a cement slab, but beware of deep mud that sucks to your boots and legs. Cling as close to the causeway wall to avoid sinking in the mud. Wading boots are recommended.
