Tips for Birding

The campus is closed to visitors during school hours. The best time to visit is weekends, school holidays, and summer. One can check the grassy field from Carmel Valley Road to see if there are any geese flocks feedIng there. It’s possible to pull into the parking lot to do a quick scan if it is during school hours, which are 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM Monday thru Friday. There is no safe pull out on the main road.

About this Location

East of the main campus is the Hilton Bialik Habitat MEarth. It’s a native garden that once contained a bird banding lab for the middle schoolers. There are a couple of trails through the brush and trees. Mostly now it is used for a native plant nursery with occasional plant sales and special events.

You can park in the parking lot in front of MEarth and walk in. One of the trails will take you south to the back side of the campus. There is an open field that was once part of the Rancho Cañada golf course. It is slated for development, but until then it’s good to look through the grasses and scan the sky for the common raptors such as Turkey Vultures, Red -tailed  and Red-shouldered Hawks  (which nest here), and White-tailed Kites.
