About this Location

The Stephen F. Austin Experimental Forest (SFAEF) is a 1,036-ha region maintained and operated by the United States Forest Service Southern Research Station. Since 1945, the forest has been used for long-term forestry and wildlife studies, providing an example of forest conditions under decades of fire suppression and nominal understory management. SFAEF also hosts the East Texas Plant Material Center, a nursery for native plants with a conservation focus.

To access the main trails, take the primary entrance road to where the road forks at a yellow gate. Proceed to the left and down the hill to the main visitor parking area. There are restrooms and water fountains available here.
