Boy Scout Rd./Aguja Canyon, Ranch Road 1832

Tips for Birding

You may consider doing two checklists one for the first 4-5 miles and one for the area past the Espy Ranch gate. The habitat on the back half is slightly different than the front. The first section is grassy, scrubby habitat on an open prairie with very little vegetation higher than 6-7 feet. The back section has 2 creek crossings with water on wet years. The road ends in a deep canyon at the gate of the Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch. The prairie section is incredible for sparrows for all seasons. Scaled Quail, Greater Roadrunners, Hawks, falcons, and eagles. You will pass through a ranch area that is good for Yellow-headed Blackbirds and possibly Bronzed Cowbird. As you get closer to the mountains be on the lookout in the summer for Varied Bunting, Bullock's Oriole and Black-chinned Sparrow. The canyon is good for Black-chinned as well as Canyon Wren. Look high for possible White-throated Swift and Violet-green Swallow.
