Great reservoir for water birds such as 10 species of ducks and geese. During migration there has been several species of shore birds recorded and 12 species of sparrows have been spotted and recorded.
Somervell County Water District opened Wheeler Branch Park on August 07, 2010. The park has a boat ramp, with a floating dock, a beach area that also has a floating dock island, public restrooms, covered picnic areas and a large pavilion for group picnics and parties. There is also a very nice fishing pier. Boats are allowed, but no gas-powered motors, only electric motors.
