Elkhorn Slough--Nature Conservancy and/or Packard Ranch (access restricted)

Tips for Birding

This land, on the Springfield Plateau adjacent to Elkhorn Slough, is privately owned by the Nature Conservancy and the Packard family. Both owners manage the property as a nature reserve. There are trails or old roads (this was once ranch land); access is restricted to those who obtain permission for either research or the occasional public field trip visit. The area is covered, with permission, during the annual Christmas Bird Count. As can be seen from the aerial view, it contains low, rolling hills with much grassland, ravines with oak woodland, and some ponds and creeks. It edges to the south and east are tidal estuaries. It is bounded on the west by the old salt ponds (today''s Moss Landing Willdlife Area, which also has access restrictions).

Birds of Interest

The rolling hills are good for raptors, including Golden Eagle. In years past, it often held disbursing Burrowing Owls in winter, but numbers have declined. One pond has served as a heron rockery for Black-crowned Night-Herons. The mix of habitats and a shoreline along Elkhorn Slough has produced an impressive checklist, despite quite limited coverage.
